Wangechi Mutu is a contemporary Kenyan artist noted for her work conflating gender, race, art history, and personal identity. Creating complex collages, videos, sculptures, and performances, Mutu’s work features recurring mysterious leitmotifs such as masked women and snake-like tendrils. Wangechi Mutu, Kenyan-born artist whose multimedia work often focuses on society’s convention to project all ‘that is desired or despised’ on the body of women. Wangechi Mutu (born 22 June 1972) is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Through a variety of media including painting collage, sculpture, performance and video, Wangechi Mutu explores questions of self-image, gender constructs, cultural trauma and environmental destruction. Water Woman, 2017, a cast bronze sculpture by the artist Wangechi Mutu (Kenyan, born 1972 in Nairobi, lives and works in Nairobi and New York), sits perched atop a grassy mound at the foot of the amphitheater in the museum’s fourteen-acre sculpture park at Laguna Gloria.
